My Bloody Valentine – The Roundhouse 20-6-08

This is what it looked like for us. Occasionally you’d hear Kevin Shields, but his vocals were so quiet, it truly was occasionally. Bilinda you could hear, but not see. Colm you could see, Deb you could see, holding everything together.

For the first twenty minutes or so I didn’t feel like I knew the songs, then things kicked in, singles, b-sides and songs I knew from 20 years ago.

‘Soon’ was the moment where the noise stopped, and it became trance-like, a noise which became beautiful rather than just deafening, the rest of the songs building to the ending of ‘You Made Me Realise’ and no encore.

In some ways I wish we’d been down the front, in others, I’m glad we weren’t. I’ve had my time down the front at MBV gigs – I’m 20 years older and feeling it – sitting down was much more preferable.

There was weirdness, however, in an email prior to the gig – offering me access to a VIP bar, for just twenty pounds, and a complimentary glass of champagne. Of course I didn’t – I’d have had to burn my stripy t-shirt – how horribly corporate sounding…

See you in another 20…

Tottenham Talk

Last week my friend Vic and I had a kind of… brainstorm. We’re both members at several Tottenham forums, and while we do like posting on some, it sometimes feels a bit frustrating, for varying reasons I don’t need to go into.

The simple solution to this is – if you don’t like something, do something about it. So we did. As of today www.tottenhamtalk.co.uk now exists – it’s simple, and not in competition with any other forums (we’ll both post as much as we ever did everywhere else), but hopefully less off-topic, and just more Tottenham natter.

So if you fancy it, come and join us. Oh, and you don’t have to support Tottenham, but bear in mind, if you don’t, we reserve the right to point and laugh at you if we beat you. Ok?

Stump!

Sorry, twice in two days, I couldn’t not mention this though.
Click the image and pre-order it now! A Stump box-set. Ohh how I can’t wait to make my workmates (there’s only the one Stump fan) all cheery, once this is properly released. Kev Hopper has some pictures on his website too.

dEUS are back…

Vantage Point, the new dEUS album arrived in the post this morning. I’ve had a love thing going on with dEUS in my head since the time I caught the ‘Suds and Soda’ video on MTV Europe, just as it was released in the UK. Driving to Scotland one day, as I crossed the border just beyond Carlisle in the car, it came on the radio. I was hooked, for no other reason than the music and my brain worked well, plus there’s certain songs in life I can still place where I was the first time I heard them.

Anyway, ‘Vantage Point’. It’s all grown up. It’s okay! I wasn’t sure about the new single ‘The Architect’ but actually, it works when you hear the whole album. I’m relieved. I was worried we were growing apart – once that happens, you get to a stage where you start to get rid of your CD singles, and just keep the albums (well, I do anyway…). So yes, new dEUS, happy me. The end.

Cane Hill Hospital, 1882.

At the start of the month we finally found how to get close to Cane Hill Hospital. It’s intrigued me for a while, this place – you can see the two towers as you drive into Coulsdon from Wallington – it’s one of those places you end up wondering exactly what it is – it’s an old Asylum, one of three in this area (I think this one is in the best condition), which eventually was cleared out around the time Thatcher’s ‘Care In the Community’ started in 1990.

The building stands on top of a hill, with views all over, apparently all the way back towards London (we couldn’t tell from where we were, we need to go back). The years haven’t been good to Cane Hill – many arson attacks and general vandalism, mean the buildings have a large wire fence around it with nasty barbed wire across the top.

It doesn’t stop people getting in, however – and there’s plenty of visits with photos, catalogued at Urban Exploration sites. Google is your friend.

Apparently a documentary about Cane Hill is being made, though where it’s up to is anyone’s guess.

It’s a huge area, with many different wings, a mortuary, a chapel, a laundry room, an incinerator, which is over the other side which we couldn’t get close to (mainly due to fading light). The whole area has guard dogs patrolling, so it’s not like you can easily sneak through a gap in the fence… it’s a really cold but interesting place. We’ll be heading back as soon as the weather improves a bit more… and hopefully before it (apparently) gets redeveloped into flats.

It is a really interesting place. I’d love to get inside, though I can’t see it happening…

You know

When WordPress say that you should update your blog to the latest version, then give you instructions, which finish along the lines of “yes, that really is it, you don’t need to do any more now”, they really truly mean it.

Been a bit slack at updating here, but there hasn’t been a huge amount to talk about. We bought a Wii for Christmas, which arrived just before, and games from my in-laws are carrying us through this rubbish tv time right now. Honestly, tv companies must know that it’s cold and miserable in January, and we just want some decent programmes to watch. No such luck.

I’ve taken to reading the latest headlines about Tottenham, and have tried to translate. For example, The Mirror ran a report today, saying how Robbo had a massive argument with the boss, after being sensationally dropped last night. However, I have a few thoughts.
1. Robbo never tends to play in Carling Cup games – Cerny has been in goal for every single one this season, hasn’t he?
2. The journalist in question is a gooner, and makes things up about Tottenham
3. Everyone elses reports seem to report the Mirror report, which seems a bit silly, considering it’s probably not true.

Let’s try Berbatov now. Seems he wants to be left alone to get on with his football, but yet everyone has something to say about him. Usually about how he’s leaving Tottenham. I’m somewhat resigned to him going at the end of this season, maybe on a high if we win a cup (I said “if”), but right now, nah. Let’s face it, he came to a team he thought was challenging for a Top 4 spot in the league, after the Lasagne-gate incident – but it all went wrong, didn’t it? We kept finishing 5th. (How nice that was, and I’m not complaining) – but maybe he thought he was on the cusp of one last bit of greatness, before thinking about retirement in a few years time.Closer to reality, we’ll probably finish 8th this year, win the UEFA cup, and miss out on Europe. Oh, and most of our English players will be sold to Man City and Aston Villa, and where we had pride at fielding a primarily British side against opponents (and singing songs to remind them), the only british player left will be Robbie Keane. (This is assuming Ledley King is injured, of course) The entire Spanish National team will be Tottenham players. Yes, this is probably a bit silly. I bet the papers have reported it already.
